Good for

  • Portrait, event, product, and small commercial shoots
  • Setting deliverables, turnaround, and usage rights
  • Deposits and cancellation terms

Not for

  • Large commercial campaigns needing specialist licensing counsel

Photography disputes usually aren’t about the photos — they’re about expectations. How many edited images? When do they arrive? Can the client use them commercially? Settle those up front and the shoot is the easy part.

What to cover

  • The shoot — date, time, location, and what you’re shooting.
  • Deliverables — number of edited images and the format.
  • Turnaround — when the gallery is delivered.
  • Usage rights — personal vs commercial use, and any limits.
  • Payment and cancellation — deposit, balance, and what happens if the date moves.

Usage rights are the one people forget — and the one that causes the awkward call three months later. Spell them out.

Make it real

Describe the booking, review the terms with your client, and both sign — each keeping a copy.

Common questions

Should I take a deposit?

A deposit to hold the date is standard and protects you against last-minute cancellations. State the amount and whether it’s refundable.

Why specify usage rights?

So a personal portrait session doesn’t turn into unpaid commercial use. Define what the client can and can’t do with the images.
