Selling a low-value vehicle privately still deserves a written record. A bill of sale captures the essentials and the "as-is" terms — but note it usually sits alongside your local title and registration process, not instead of it.
What to include
- The vehicle — make, model, year, color, and VIN.
- Odometer reading at the time of sale.
- Condition — known issues, sold as-is.
- Price, payment, buyer, seller, and date.
Don’t skip the official step
A bill of sale records the agreement between you and the buyer. Transferring the title/registration is a separate process handled by your local authority (e.g. the DMV) — check their requirements so ownership is properly transferred.
